I flew to the U.S. to study English at a school in Ashland, Oregon. It was decades ago, so I’m not sure if it was the airport in Seattle, Washington or the one in Portland, Oregon. I was waiting for a connecting flight. The terminal was more like a clinic waiting room; it was pretty small. I was able to hear other people's conversations.
There was a group of people standing near me. A mother holding her baby said to the people in the group, “It’s her first Nike,” showing the shoes that the baby was wearing. First Nike! It became one of my favorite phrases I learned while I was in the U.S. then.
Now I often give a pair of sneakers to my friends’ babies.
